Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

The purpose of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is to see patients and provide brief psychotherapy and psychopharmacological medication management and refer to other psychiatric and medical services as needed. Qualified candidates must have a master’s degree in Nursing, hold a Minnesota Board of Nursing (APRN) license and be a certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner reports to the CEO/COO/Medical Director and supervises Medical Assistants and support staff.


This position will be located at Secure Base Wellness Center in Northfield, MN


  • Provide psychiatric services to a variety of patients – children, adolescents, families, couples and individuals – across the lifespan within the clinic

  • Provide direct clinical care in psychiatry, including brief assessments and interventions, in a primary care setting

  • Develop behaviorally focused, outcomes-based treatment plans of care that address mental health, functional impairment and co-occurring addictive or medical disorders

  • Champion primary care behavioral health, a model of integrated care that focuses on the full spectrum of patient health through close collaboration with multidisciplinary primary care teams

  • Consult with primary care providers to assist with ongoing management of the behavioral health needs of their patients

  • Develop and lead staff education in psychiatric issues

  • Engage the patient and family to develop treatment plans that address identified goals

  • Participate in relevant and ongoing professional training

  • Practice as a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) in the care of patients in a clinical setting

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments

  • Diagnose and treat illnesses

  • Prescribe medications, treatments and therapy

  • Provide referrals for specialty care

  • Perform consultations within specialty

  • Consult with collaborating physician/primary care provider

  • Maintain knowledge of clinical areas of practice

  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team

  • Have excellent team working abilities; professional image via appearance and conduct

  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, physicians and the public

  • Possess advanced physical and psychosocial health assessment skills

  • Have sound knowledge of adult health and related diagnostic and clinical therapies

  • Teach patients, families, staff and students; knowledge of research methodologies

  • Be competent to function as preceptor

  • Demonstrate ability to deal with high acuity/complexity and rapidly changing situations

Licensure & Experience Requirements

  • Formal education as a nurse practitioner in an area consistent with the patient population served

  • Current Registered Nurse License for the State of Minnesota

  • Certification as a nurse practitioner by appropriate professional organization

  • Minnesota prescriptive authority and DEA licensure

  • ACLS certification preferred; at least AHA BLS certification required

Secure Base Counseling Center pays employees every two weeks. Paychecks include a statement detailing the sessions being paid. Travel reimbursement, if applicable, is paid every two weeks, along with payroll, at 40 cents per minute. Reimbursement for approved expenses will also be paid every two weeks, along with payroll.

Freedom to Act

Employee is generally free to organize and prioritize own job duties, as well as assignments to other support staff, and knows where to refer people for assistance or guidance when necessary – or appropriately follows up to acquire a resolution. Employee works independently and with minimum supervision in carrying out necessary tasks. Employee is able to make decisions and answer questions using written resources such as the Employee Handbook, policy and other resources. In the rare event the Clinical Administrator is not available and the need is urgent, direct contact with the Clinical Director may be sought.
